Yesterday doesn't seem so far away.
Not when you look back at each of the successes The Beatles have achieved -- even 30 years after their breakup. And with the launch of the new "best of" collection The Beatles 1 on November 14, their legacy lives on.
The sheer number of Beatles pop hits is staggering. Their perfect songs have become soundtracks to movies, have been used to sell every product under the sun, and have left an indelible mark on people's hearts, minds, and lives. You may well even remember where you where when you first heard "Yesterday" or "Hey Jude."
The Beatles 1 is slated to become the biggest selling album of all time.
This is a momentous accomplishment in today's pop music climate, where the charts are dominated by Backstreet Boys and Brittany Spears formula tunes. The new Beatles album of already-heard, already-bought, and already-loved songs will nevertheless likely break all previous records and reestablish the Fab Four as the greatest band. Ever.
On the album, fans can expect most of the band's number one hits from the U.S.A. and the U.K -- everything from "Love Me Do" to "The Long And Winding Road" can be found on the 27-track, 79-minute CD.
And to support the release of The Beatles 1, John, Paul, George, and Ringo have entered the electronic age: welcome to TheBeatles.com, the official Beatles Web site, which launched November 13.
The Flash-filled and Shockwave-saturated Web site focuses mostly on the new album's tracks. Each song has its own page with related stats -- everything from chart details to sleeves and labels to photos.
Some of the songs have added features. On the "Yellow Submarine" page you can help rid Pepperland of the Blue Meanies in true Space Invaders style. There's also the "We Can Work It Out" audio jigsaw puzzle, and the not-yet-fully-functional "Paperback Writer" interactive gallery of pictures and facts from The Beatles Anthology.
And this brings us to the third medium that the band's surviving members have recently conquered: book publishing. The Beatles Anthology, released on October 5, features contributions from all Beatles members -- including John Lennon -- as well as from Yoko Ono, and producer George Martin. The extraordinary volume of work chronicles their experiences -- sexual, as well as musical -- and includes frank accounts of their drug use, and tales of their relationships with manager Brian Epstein.
Quite a year for a band that broke up over 30 years ago. Not only do The Beatles break record charts, but The Beatles Anthology is currently Number 4 in the Chapters Online non-fiction chart.
Undeniably, the appeal of The Beatles crosses generations, cultures, and continents. They started a musical revolution that has spanned close to four decades. And now, at the beginning of a new millennium and information explosion, they've got their own dot.com.
